Fertility and Acupuncture

Whether you are on an IVF program, having difficulty getting pregnant, or just want to make sure you have the best chance of conceiving and having a healthy baby, then acupuncture can help you.

Acupuncture can be used for male and female fertility problems. It can be used to improve egg and sperm quality, regulate hormone levels and restore health and vitality to the body. Thus giving you and your partner the best chance of conceiving and having a trouble-free pregnancy and a healthy and happy baby.

Scott Brisbane has worked as an acupuncturist and naturopath in Melbourne for over 20 years. He has many years experience lecturing in Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine at various colleges in Melbourne. Over that time he has helped many couples to conceive and have healthy and happy babies. More about Scott

Positive Results with Acupuncture and having Babies

Of all the natural therapies that are practiced, acupuncture is one of the most extensively studied. And there is a veritable mountain of positive research out there. Especially in regard to acupuncture, fertility and IVF.

In 2008 the British Medical Journal published a review combining the results of seven previous studies on the efficacy of acupuncture and IVF. It concluded that women having IVF treatment can boost their chances of falling pregnant by 65% simply by having acupuncture. It also found that acupuncture increases the chances of having an ongoing pregnancy by 87% and nearly doubles the chance of a successful live birth.

Peter Illingworth, medical director of the Sydney based clinic IVF Australia said: "What this new study shows is that this effect is statistically significant and is real...I would regard it as fairly convincing evidence."

A trial conducted at the University of Adelaide concluded that a pregnancy was twice as likely to occur in a group treated with acupuncture compared to a control group. The trial was specifically for women under going IVF treatment.

Dr Caroline Smith, who conducted the trial said: "Our study showed encouraging results with an increase in the pregnancy rate in the acupuncture group…the good news is the benefit is not affected by age, meaning all age groups showed the increase in IVF success rates from the acupuncture therapy."
